It truly felt as if we were flying. I had been struggling to come up with an original mini session and Owen just gave me a brilliant idea! So the very next day, I set off for the craft store and hand-made some custom"clouds".

Bevin & Jody's River House Wedding in Ben Lomond My husband, Alec, lived in Ben Lomond before we met so when we heard Bevin & Jody were planning their ceremony at Ben Lomond's River House, we were excited to have a reason to go there. For anyone that hasn't been, it's a cute little town in the Santa Cruz mountains framed in Redwood trees. We had already done Bevin & Jody's engagement shots, so we already knew they were really fun to work with. Sure enough, upon our arrival there was an aire of relaxation to everything. The guys arrived on site early, Bevin couldn't have been more calm, everything was on schedule...what was this madness? I am fairly used to the organized chaos that is a wedding schedule so this was a complete departure from the norm. The day completely focused on Bevin & Jody coming together as husband and wife and anyone present that day could see that they were a perfect fit. When Bevin walked down the aisle, stood in front of Jody and simply mouthed "Hi Baby", I nearly lost it behind the camera. How sweet are they! The stress-free, laid-back approach this couple embodied completely freed me to get some fun and creative shots that I am excited to share, so here are the highlights from the day.

Welcome to the world Rowan Brooke! Nothing like doing a shoot with such a brand new tiny baby. It's easy to forget how soft their skin is and how impossibly small their little baby fingernails are. I have a feeling that this girl will be full of surprises as no sooner had the ink dried on her post birth appointment date, Rowan decided she just couldn't wait for her photo shoot debut and decided to arrive early. Welcome to the world Rowan, you nailed your first photo shoot.

David & Elisabeth's City Hall Wedding We just had our first civil ceremony at City Hall in San Francisco last month and I was thrilled. This SF landmark is a photographer's dream. There were countless brides running around the hall being trailed by photographers weighed down with gear and enthusiasts/tourists snapping selfies while newlywed couples were getting portraits done in the background. David & Elisabeth planned this destination ceremony and will return home to celebrate with their families in both Texas and Sweden, respectively. They wed in an alcove off the main staircase in front of a small group of friends with Elisabeth's mother and grandmother tuning in from an ocean away via Skype. Afterwards we all piled into a limo and set off for portraits in front the Golden Gate Bridge. They managed to pull off a beautiful destination SF City Hall wedding seamlessly.

8 Simple tips to ensure great customer service for your Bride & Groom In addition to taking photos, walking backwards down an aisle at a mystifying pace, changing your ISO settings a hundred times, all while trying not to miss the little details, and congratulatory hugs, your job is to ensure that the bride & groom have a great experience. Not just with you as their photographer, but overall.
I am proud to be a 5 star rated vendor among my brides. These are my 8 easy tips that you can do to make sure your couple has an amazing customer service experience.
1.Communication - Make her your top priority from the very first contact. Response time counts, with smart phones these days you can check your email anywhere! My clients always compliment my prompt responses, it lets them know you will be there for them when they need you and helps you stand out as a vendor among competitors. Make sure you know your couples expectations, send session reminders and re-confirm your arrival time the day before the big day. Little things like this help a stressed out bride to know her vendors are completely on top of things.
2. Go beyond photos- Being a photographer you also get the job description of being the unofficial bridal assistant. Assist her in anyway you can. Carry breath mints, extra bobby pins, a safety pin. Anything that will make her day easier, and she will certainly appreciate your thoughtfulness come review time.
3. Know your stuff- Often times I am with the bride and bridemaids more than anyone else that day. Random questions come up. Do you know what side a boutonniere goes on? How do you pin this thing? Can you bustle my dress? How do I pee in this dress? Chances are you've been to more weddings than they have. All eyes usually look your way for an answer. It's your job to figure it out!
4. Do your research- Know your venue and photo spots before it's portrait time. It saves valuable time and ensures you get the best vantage points for key moments.
5. Thoughtfulness- These days it's not too common in customer service to find someone that will go a little bit extra. Be that person. I always make sure to send my brides a little Thank you card with my flash drive delivery. I follow up with check in emails and anniversaries to the best of my ability.
6. Common courtesy- This is often overlooked. While I maintain copyright on my photographs, I value my client's privacy. I no longer tag my brides in social media, what I do instead is invite them to tag themselves through a private email and I notify them first when they are featured in my blog. This gives them an opportunity to be the first one to share their photos with their friends and family. Should a client tell me that she finds a certain photo unflattering, I would remove it without question.
7. Smile behind the camera- Have you ever heard the phrase "When you smile, the whole world smiles with you."? It's true but this can be harder than it sounds. I suffer from a bad case of angry resting face. Which means when my face is relaxed, I look like I am in an awful mood. Without fail, when I would excitedly look back at the behind the scenes photos, I look well...quite frankly, pissed off. This was a harsh realization, I LOVE my job but my face just wasn't conveying it. I had to learn to smile more, laugh didn't come natural to me and still doesn't but when you are at ease and smiling, it makes everyone else that much more comfortable and natural in front of the camera, which makes your job easier.
8. Over deliver- Give your bride something unexpected. When practical, I aim to edit the photos and deliver their gallery early. This isn't always the case come busy wedding season. So instead I aim for special sneak peeks, blog features, a surprise slideshow at the reception, something to keep the couple excited for their finished gallery and keep their great experience fresh in their mind.
If you still find yourself struggling to improve client satisfaction, remember to keep it simple. The smallest acts of consideration can go a long way. Shooting a wedding is just as much about customer service, as it is about getting "The shot".

Janelle & Chad's Saratoga Mountain Winery Wedding This is the Saratoga Mountain Winery Wedding of Janelle and Chad. I originally booked Janelle over the phone all they way from North Carolina. Her excitement for her big day was contagious and her bubbly personality on the phone was ten fold in person. I wanted to share Janelle and Chad's wedding because they added a few unique things to their wedding day that I thought was a great departure from the norm. We had a "first look", they "planted" a tree for part of the ceremony, surprised everyone with a choreographed first dance and had a sparkler grand exit with a getaway car at the end! It was so much fun to be a part of! Here is a short look at their wedding day story.

10 Things to tell your Wedding Photographer If you were to google "Questions to ask your photographer" you will get 52,700,000 results. I've heard most of those standard questions while chatting with clients over coffee at Starbucks. While hearing the answers may help you figure out if the photographer is professional and adept as a business owner, I find that the most important things to consider are in the portfolio and personality. Your photographer could be awesome on paper but if you're uncomfortable with your photographer, the end result won't be as good as it could be.

Instead I thought it would be more helpful to turn the table and write about the things that I ask of my perspective bride and grooms. These are questions that I ask to ensure I am in the right place at the right time, so I won't miss a thing. So here are 10 things to tell your Wedding Photographer.

1. Venue requirements- Some churches or venues have shooting guidelines or insurance requirements for their photographers. If you are unsure of the requirements, you can put your photographer in touch with the coordinator or official to ensure guidelines are properly followed.

2. Size of your wedding party or expected guest list- This helps photographers properly prepare for the event.

 3. Direction- If you feel awkward in front of the camera and would like strong direction, make sure you voice it to your photographer. Likewise, if you feel more comfortable with candid shots and just being yourself. A good photographer will be able to provide strong direction to large groups while knowing when to back off and just take candids and let the moment unfold.

4. Family matters- Does Uncle Bob not get along well with Cousin Billy? Best not to stick them next to each other in the family photo! It's good to let your photographer know the family dynamics so we can discreetly pose them on opposite sides of the family photos.

5. Must have shots!- If you have been spending a lot of time on Pinterest than you probably have some specific shots you want taken. Keep in mind to use it just for general idea gathering and work with your photographer to get a shot list together, or perhaps just a few must have photos that you have been thinking of hanging on your wall.
6. Have Nots- Hate selective colors? Cheesy poses? Only like a few subtle black and whites? Just like a DJ's "Do not play list", It's also a good idea to let your photographer know what you don't like in your photos.
7. Timeline- Usually a week or two before the ceremony you give a timeline to some of your vendors to ensure the event runs along smoothly and on time.
8. Ceremony details - I find it helpful to know ahead of time if there will be any special ceremony touches that you've added in to make it your own. Sand ceremony, unity candles, hand fasting, and readings are common examples. It helps your photographer be in the right place at the right time of the ceremony.
9. Traditions- Will you be having a first look or staying traditional and not seeing each other until you walk down the aisle? Also be sure to note any traditional dances, bouquet tossing, or grand exits you may have planned through out your day.
10. Details, Details, Details- Are you wearing your great grandmother's necklace as your something old? Did you spend every night the last two weeks handcrafting those wedding favors?
Tell your photographer, because we want to capture all those details you'll want to remember.
If you have any questions, comments or have something to add, please feel free to message me or comment below!

Kirsten & George's Lake Side Engagement Shoot

We had a Lake side engagement shoot this past Saturday that I wanted to share! Kirsten is one of my upcoming September Brides. She and her fiancĂ©, George, love their fishing dates, so we incorporated that into the shoot. With hardly any rain this year, it was hard to settle on a good location, until they happened upon Vasona Park in Los Gatos. It turned out to be a perfect fit! Can't wait to shoot the wedding in September!
